DIAMOND GRADING

Learn About The Four Cs

Until the 1940’s and 50’s, there was no agreed-upon standard by which diamonds could be judged.
GIA developed the 4C’s and the GIA international Diamond Grading system to objectively compare and evaluate diamonds.
Today the 4C’s of Diamond Quality is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond.

CUT

Diamonds are renowned for their ability to transmit light and sparkle so intensely.
The traditional 58 facets in a round brillant diamond, each precisely cut and defined, are as small as two milimeters in diameter. But without this precision, a diamond wouldn’t be nearly as beautiful. The allure of a particular diamond depends more on cut than anything else.

COLOUR

The diamond colour evaluation of most gem-quality diamonds is based on the absence of color, the less color, the higher their value.
GIA’s color-grading scale for diamonds is the industry standard. The scale begins with the letter D, representing colorless, and continues with increasing presence of color to the letter Z, or near-colorless.

CLARITY

Natural diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth. they often contain unique birthmarks, eiteher internal (inclusions) or external (blemishes).
Diamond clarity refers to the absence of these inclusions and blemishes.
While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes, the higher its value.

CARAT WEIGHT

Diamonds and other gemstones are weighed in metric carats: one carat is equal to 0.2 grams, about the same weight as a perperclip.
Just as a dollar is divided into 100 pennies, a carat us divided into 100 points. For example, a 50 point diamond weighs 0.50 carats.
All else is being equal, diamond price increases with diamond carat weight because larger diamonds are more rare and more desirable.
But two diamonds of equal carat weight can have very different values (and prices) depending on three other factors of the diamond 4C’s: Clarity, Color and Cut.
